USS Lafayette, ex-Normandie, caught fire 9 February 1942 while being converted to a troopship in New York. Tons of water poured into the hull to fight the fire caused her to capsize. Righted and raised in 1943, the damage from the fire and a year submerged was judged too extensive to permit restoration, and the hull was scrapped in 1946. |
