Hit by two torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-58, Indianapolis was sunk just days before the end of the war, after delivering components of the atomic bombs to the island of Tinian. Due to miscommunication and procedural errors, the disappearance of Indianapolis was not noted for some time. When survivors were finally spotted by a plane on routine patrol, a massive rescue effort was launched, resulting in the recovery of 316 of the crew of 1,199. This incident has been the subject of several books and documentary films.
