While the various pages of this site may present data in different ways, there are certain elements that are common to all pages. These common elements will be described here, using the page template at the right to highlight the section being discussed.

The page header identifies the site, and will be color-coded to indicate the section of the site. In summary, these sections are:
  • Early Carriers, color-coded brown
  • World War II, colored red
  • The Jet Age, in cyan
  • The Nuclear Navy, in radiation-warning purple
  • The Marines, in camouflage
  • General historical information, coded blue. This is the color selection used for our template.
  • Site information, in gray. This page is a site information page.
The header includes the flags of the United States and the U.S. Navy; the flag of the Marine Corps appears on the appropriate pages. In addition, the home page header includes images of six ships representing the various periods of carrier development. From the left, they are:
  • CV-1 USS Langley, the first carrier
  • CV-9 USS Essex, from World War II
  • CVE-9 USS Bogue, also from WWII
  • CV-59 USS Forrestal, the first of the jet age supercarriers
  • CVN-68 USS Nimitz, the second nuclear-powered carrier
  • LPH-7 USS Guadalcanal, an amphibious assault ship

Each page has a sidebar on the left, which displays some information about the page and contains a quick-reference site navigation menu and a number of links to other websites. The components of this sidebar are described below. Occasionally, the sidebar may be longer than the content of the page.

Update

This page last updated:
1 January 1999
The first item in the sidebar is a Date Updated block, as shown at right. This is the last date that the information presented on the page was changed or updated. Changes to the page format, colors, etc. will (usually) not be reflected in this date.

Dedication

Dedication

To be determined
The next item is the page's Dedication. Eventually, most pages on the site will be dedicated; some will be to naval heroes or other notable individuals, some to lesser-known or unknown individuals or groups. Dedications are at the webmaster's discretion. Occasionally, this block will be removed in favor of a dedication within the page itself; the Carriers in the Space Age page is an example of this. The dedication may or may not relate to the content of the page.

Site information pages, such as this one, and reference pages will not contain dedications (unless I run out of pages elsewhere).

Navigation Menu

This is a basic menu to aid the visitor in navigating the site. This menu is scrollable and provides links to all major, and some minor, sections of the site. An additional page, listed on this menu, is the Site Table of Contents, which displays direct links to every page on the site. Not all pages are accessible from this menu; some appear only in the Table of Contents.

Links

Below the navigation menu are a number of permanent links. These are chosen at the discretion of the webmaster, and do not necessarily imply endorsement of The Carrier Project by the linked site or, for that matter, endorsement of the site by either The Carier Project or the webmaster.

Answers.com

The first link is a query box to the website Answers.com. This is a basic information look-up site. Type in your subject and click on the "Who is... What is..." button. A new browser tab or window will open displaying some information about the subject. Typical items displayed will be dictionary definitions of the words or phrases used, encyclopedia entries about the word or phrase, and links to other relevant sites.

Support the Troops

The Support the Troops section contains links to all of the United States armed services - and their careers/recruiting websites - as well as a number of private organisations that provide support to our soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. May of these organisations operate on donations; please consider helping them out. You can add these buttons to your own website or blog; see our Support the Troops page.

Stay Informed

In Stay Informed, you will find links to a number of blogs, primarily military-themed.

Each page will include a title, and possibly one or more sub-titles. These name the page, and may include alternate or additional identifying information. Title bars will be color-coded to reflect the appropriate section of the site.

The example below is from a page about a battle in the Pacific during World War II. The "official" name of the battle is given in the main title, while additional descriptive information is provided in the subtitle. In this case, the word "saga" is used for it's connotation of epic or legend, while "Taffy 3" identifies the unit involved.

The main part of the page, this area may be arranged in a number of different ways, depending on the nature of the information being presented. This includes general information, ship-class data, and individual ship histories.
Each of these types is detailed in individual pages in this section.

Some sections of the site may include detailed section menus, like the one below, to allow the visitor to navigate directly between the pages of the section without having to return to the site Table of Contents.
