Page Layout - Class Information
The Class Information page displays technical data about the class - dimensions, engineering, etc. This page will use the same format to explain the various elements.
The background of the page, as well as the various title and section bars, will use the standard color codes that unify the sections of the site.
Immediately below the title bar will usually be a short narrative giving the history of the class, some background information about the design, and other information of interest.
Note: In the event that a class consists of only one ship, this page and the Individual Ship Page will be combined.
Construction Data
Physical data about the class of the vessel. Note that this is design information; actual construction may include variations. When possible, these variations will be noted either here or in the individual ship pages.
When possible, this section will include a so-called "beauty shot"; a "posed", well-lit photograph of a typical ship of the class.
Dimensions
Displacement
- Standard: Weight or displacement of "the ship complete, fully manned, engined, and equipped ready for sea, including all armament and ammunition, equipment, outfit, provisions and fresh water for crew, miscellaneous stores and implements of every description that are intended to be carried in war, but without fuel or reserve feed water on board." (Definition of "standard displacement" given in the Washington and London Naval Treaties).
- Normal: The same as standard displacement, but with two-thirds supply of stores and fuel (the United States Navy definition). Can also include all fuel, oils/lubricants and water. This is regarded as an average operational displacement.
- Full Load: Weight/displacement of the fully loaded ship, including all stores, supplies, munitions, personnel and (unlike standard tonnage) fuel and reserve feed water.
Length
- Waterline: Length of the ship at the waterline.
- Overall: Length between perpendiculars at the extreme bow and stern of the ship.
- Flight Deck: Length of flight deck only.
Beam
- Waterline: Maximum width of the ship at the waterline.
- Overall: Width between perpendiculars at the extreme port and starboard sides.
- Flight Deck: Width of flight deck only.
Draft
- Standard: Depth of keel at standard displacement.
- Normal: Depth of keel at normal displacement.
- Full Load: Depth of keel at full load.
Propulsion
Machinery: Information on boilers & turbines, number of propellor shafts/propellors, etc.
Speed: Maximum speed, in knots.
Range/Endurance: Maximum range at economical cruising speed, without refuelling. Usually given as miles @ knots. May include information on available fuel tankage.
Personnel
Ship's Company: Number of personnel assigned to the ship itself.
Air Group: Number of personnel assigned to the ship's normal air group.
If only one figure is given, it is a combined total.
Flight Deck
Elevators: Number and location of elevators used to move aircraft between the flight deck and the hangar deck. May also include information of elevator size and weight capacity.
Catapults: Number and location of catapults used to accelerate aircraft to flight speed.
Arresting Gear: Details about the equipment used to slow aircraft upon landing.
Armament
Weapons: Number and type of guns and/or missiles mounted on the carrier.
Aircraft: Number (and possibly types) of aircraft nomally operated by the carrier. This is a variable, depending on the mission assigned.
Refits
Major modifications applied to most, if not all, of the ships of this class. Information will include engineering details, dates of application, etc.
Notes
General notes about the class, not covered elsewhere.
