Page Layout - General Information

Many pages, particularly top-level pages, present general, or summary, information. This is done in one of two formats: narrative and tabular. Narrative format is simply textual information - sentences & paragraphs. This part of this page is in narrative format. Tabular format uses tables or lists. The Timeline page is an example of a table-based format; the Origin of Carrier Names uses lists.

In either case there are certain elements that are often used. These elements may also be used on the Class Data and Individual Ship pages.

Section Breaks

Pages may be sub-divided into sections, much as this page is. Sections will be delineated by color-coded banners like the ones used here.

Photographs & Images

 [Site title image]

A U.S. Navy photograph of CVN-74 USS John C. Stennis forms the basis of the site's "splash" logo on the home page.

The Carrier Project
Photographs, drawings or other graphic images will usually be set off in color-coded frames, like the example at right. The frame may also include a caption, other identifying information, and/or a link.

Parenthetical Notes

Such information will be set off in a boxed area of the page.
Occasionally, information will be presented that is not directly part of the narrative of a page. For example, such information may be necessary explanatory or background material, or andecdotal recollections.

Sources

Sources

Source Source (book) [ book icon ] Source (DVD) [ Compact Disc icon ] Source (website) [ World Wide Web icon ]
Many pages contain lists of the references and sources used for that page. Some of these sources provided specific information that was included in the page; others were either used for additional background information, or are provided as a convenient source of further reading for the visitor.

Sources may include an icon indicating the type of media (book, video, website). Buttons link to the source itself (if a website) or to it's detailed entry in the References section.

Section Menu

Pages in some sections of the site will include section menus, like the one below. This allows one-click navigation within the sections, without having to use the sidebar menu or return to the site Table of Contents. Section menus will most often appear at the bottom of the page, just above the footer. They can be identified by their gold border and steel-gray background. The individual buttons in the menu may be color-coded to indicate the section of the site being linked, or may just use the page's highlight color.

Footer

The last line of each page is a bar which serves both to delineate the page and to provide a quick link back to the beginning of the page. There is no information provided below this footer bar.
