Aircraft Carriers of the U. S. Navy (Second Edition) by Stefan Terzibaschitsch
"This fully comprehensive book on the most powerful ships in the history of naval warfare covers all American fleet carriers - even those never completed - between the Langley (CV- 1), a converted collier, and the latest nuclear-powered giants of the Nimitz type.
Details such as armament, electronics and camouflage schemes are organized systematically for easy reference, and a concise service history of each ship is illustrated with several photos per vessel and plans of every class, drawn to the international 1:1250 scale. This photo-documentation pays particular attention to conversion and modifications. Nor are the aircraft ignored, for extensive tabular appendices summarise all the important types, both fixed wing and helicopter, that have ever served aboard US carriers. However, the most important feature relating to aircraft is the section devoted to carrier air groups which outlines the squadrons, numbers and types of aircraft embarked on US carriers throughout their service careers. This information is unique and has never been published in such detail before.
The second edition of this standard work has been fully revised to cover all major developments since the book's publication in 1980, including the four new ships now on order. Illustration has also been expanded and updated with five new or revised ship plans and over sixty new photographs."

Sea of Thunder by Evan Thomas
"Evan Thomas takes us inside the naval war of 1941 - 1945 in the South Pacific in a way that blends the best of military and cultural history and riveting narrative drama. He follows four men throughout: Admiral William (“Bull”) Halsey, the macho, gallant, racist American fleet commander; Admiral Takeo Kurita, the Japanese battleship commander charged with making what was, in essence, a suicidal fleet attack against the American invasion of the Philippines; Admiral Matome Ugaki, a self-styled samurai who was the commander of all kamikazes and himself the last kamikaze of the war; and Commander Ernest Evans, a Cherokee Indian and Annapolis graduate who led his destroyer on the last great charge in the last great naval battle in history.
Sea of Thunder climaxes with the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the biggest naval battle ever fought, over four bloody and harrowing days in October 1944. We see Halsey make an epic blunder just as he reaches for true glory; we see the Japanese navy literally sailing in circles, torn between the desire to die heroically and the exhausted, unacceptable realization that death is futile; we sail with Commander Evans and the men of the USS Johnston into the jaws of the Japanese fleet and exult and suffer with them as they torpedo a cruiser, bluff and confuse the enemy—and then, their ship sunk, endure fifty horrific hours in shark-infested water.
Thomas, a journalist and historian, traveled to Japan, where he interviewed veterans of the Imperial Japanese Navy who survived the Battle of Leyte Gulf and friends and family of the two Japanese admirals. From new documents and interviews, he was able to piece together and answer mysteries about the Battle of Leyte Gulf that have puzzled historians for decades. He writes with a knowing feel for the clash of cultures.
Sea of Thunder is a taut, fast-paced, suspenseful narrative of the last great naval war, an important contribution to the history of the Second World War."

Clash of the Carriers by Barrett Tillman
"In June 1944, American and Japanese carrier fleets steamed toward each other, seeking battle in the Philippine Sea. Their clashing objectives: retaining the vital Marianas for Japan versus seizing the islands for American air bases. When the fleets met, they embarked upon a naval engagement that escalated into the mast spectacular aircraft carrier battle in history - a battle that would later become known as the Great Marinas Turkey Shoot.
During two days of brutal combat, the American and Japanese carriers dueled, launching wave after wave of fighters and bombers against one another in an all-out fight for supremacy. By day and night, hundreds of planes filled the skies. When it was over, the pilots of the American Fifth Fleet had claimed more than four hundred aerial combat victories, and three Japanese carriers lay on the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.
Here is the true account of those great and terrible days, told from both sides by those who were there, in the thick of the fight. Drawing upon numerous interviews with American and Japanese veterans as well as official sources, Clash of the Carriers is an unforgettable testimonial to the bravery of those who fought and those who died in a battle that will never be forgotten."

Carrier Battle Group by S. F. Tomajczyk
"When an aircraft carrier puts to sea, it never goes alone.
Although some find it hard to believe a heavily armed, nuclear powered, 96,000 ton aircraft carrier with more than 70 combat aircraft aboard has a need for escorts, they never deploy without them. More than a dozen warships - including guided-missile cruisers, destroyers, combat supply ships, and nuclear attack submarines - sail with the carrier to enable it to wage war against anyone, anywhere in the world. This is the carrier battle group. The power and scope of this massive fighting force is impressive. If you are the enemy, it is downright frightening.
Carrier Battle Group is a detailed look at the components of this floating arsenal and how they cooperate to control the battlefield with ships, weapons, sensors, and aircraft. Details on how a battle group carries out missions for surface warfare, air strikes, antisubmarine warfare, anti- air warfare, amphibious assault, electronic warfare, combat air patrols, and reconnaissance are all covered here. With over 100 photographs and a thoroughly researched text, you will understand how America protects its interests on the high seas. Prepare to be piped aboard! Carrier Battle Group takes you on the Admiral's tour of the most lethal force to ever set sail."

Marine Air: First to Fight by John Trotti
"When the United States Marines mount an assault, they use an incredible mix of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft - 16 types including the new F/A-18 Hornet, the VTOL Harrier, the Cobra attack helicopter, and "goody-laden" ECM/ELINT planes. Ex-Marine F-4 Phantom pilot John Trotti and photographer George Hall show what it's like to a member of the USMC's elite air team. In what can truly be called a first-hand look, the reader straps into each Marine aircraft and flies a typical mission.
The stage is set. It is a 'brown side out' scenario, in desert terrain. After an amphibious landing, troops move inland where a major battle is shaping up. You are briefed, your plane is loaded for bear, and you're cleared for take-off."
