Clear the Decks by Daniel Gallery, Rear Admiral, USN (Ret.)
With wit and insight, Admiral Gallery describes the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II. As a Commander in the United States Navy, Gallery was in charge of anti-submarine air patrols operating out of Iceland. Later, as Captain, he commanded the USS Guadalcanal, one of the tiny escort aircraft carriers that brought the war to the German U-boats that had been operating with impunity far out of range of land-based patrols.
Follow Gallery and his intrepid crews as they turn an old seaplane base into a front-line patrol operation, despite terrible weather, short supplies and an impossible chain of command. Join them as they turn a brand-new escort carrier and an inexperienced crew into an effective fighting force, culminating in the capture of U-505, the only enemy man-of-war boarded and captured in battle by the Navy since the War of 1812.

U-505 by Daniel Gallery, Rear Admiral, USN (Ret.)
Originally published as Twenty Million Tons Under the Sea, U-505 tells the story of the Battle of the Atlantic. Gallery follows the careers of both U-505 and the USS Guadalcanal as both ships are launched, put into service and become effective units of their respective navies.
You will learn how German U-boat crews are trained and tested, how the boats are built - and sabotaged by the Resistance, and how the crew of U-505 deals with depth charge attacks, mechanical breakdowns and the suicide in combat of their Captain.
You will follow the career of the USS Guadalcanal from her shakedown cruise to her capture of U-505 as her crew learns how to operate and fight their ship, and pioneers the night-flying tactics that helped to end the Battle of the Atlantic.
Gallery also provides insights into the high commands of both the German and Allied navies as they battle for supremacy over, on and under the seas.
The story does not end there. Gallery goes on to tell how he and his former crew battle to save their former enemy from the scrapper's torch, eventually resulting in U-505's emplacement as a permanent exhibit at the Chicago Museum of Science and Technology.
