Note: In the movie "In Harm's Way" (1965, ), a junior officer, "Lt. McConnell" (portrayed by Tom Tryon), in the absence of all senior officers, gets his destroyer underway and takes it out of Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack. This is likely based on an actual incident on Henley during the attack. In a fortunate accident of war, an inexperienced bugler had sounded "General Quarters" (battle stations) rather than "Call to Quarters" (morning muster) just before the attack. As a result, Henley's crew were at their posts and her engineering plant was fully functional. This allowed Henley both to get under way quickly and to shoot down at least one Japanese aircraft. As in the movie, Henley was conned by a junior officer, as both the Captain and the Executive Officer were ashore at the time of the attack.
