Due to miscommunication and procedural errors, the disappearance of Indianapolis was not noted for some time. When survivors were finally spotted by a plane on routine patrol, a massive rescue effort was launched, resulting in the recovery of 316 of the crew of 1,199. This incident has been the subject of several books and documentary films.

Historical note: On 4 June 1945, Pittsburg encountered a typhoon near Okinawa. Her bow was broken off, but she steamed under her own power to port and was repaired. The bow section remained afloat and was salvaged separately (Naval Historical Center). During the salvage, it was unofficially referred to as USS McKeesport (McKeesport, Pennsylvania is a suburb of Pittsburg).
