I n 1979 I moved to Dallas to help form a band with guitarist Mark Pollock. The band became Mark Pollock and The Midnighters. We played stone blues r&b . Mark had just gotten off the road with James Cotton before that he had been with Freddie King and before that with Lowell Fulson. We played for three or more years working the Texas- Louisiana - Oklahoma circuit. Along the way we played shows with people like Gatemouth Brown, Albert Collins, James Cotton, Alex Moore, Doctor Ross (The harmonica boss), Robert Ealey, The Juke Jumpers, Anson and The Rockets and the and only James Brown!
We played often at places like The New Bluebird Lounge in Fort Worth, The Greenville Bar & Grill, Poor David's, St. Christophers, Nick's Uptown and The Cave. When in Austin, our pal Steve Dean would get us a gig at his Austex Lounge on South Congress (Magnolia Cafe now) or Soap Creek Saloon. We played at the first and only Austin Blues Heritage Festival on Town Lake with The Cobras, WC CLark, Major Burke, Little Charlie Sexton and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Other r&b bands working in the North Texas area at that time included The Millionaires (Doyle, Alex Napier and Robin Syler), Anson & The Rockets, The Juke Jumpers, Robert Wisdom & Blue Wave, Little Jr One Hand and The Blasting Caps, Little Joe Blue, Willie Willis, and often at the same bars, The Fabulous Thunderbirds or Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble.
Where are they now?
Mark Pollock runs Trans-Pecos Guitars in Alpine, David Watson is gigging in Lincoln, NE and a myspace buddy. Doyle is making records and playing shows. The others I am not sure.
