This is a Winterbourne cover... very similar to another I shot in San Marcos. It is, however, NOT a Winterbourne flange.

Winterbourne doesn't put pickbar sockets in their flanges. Their flanges have a distinctive radial hatching. This flange is from some other, unidentified, foundry. Due to it's close proximity and similar size to another cover, I suspect these two have been swapped... probably done by city workers to ease removal because Winterbourne covers do not have pickbar fittings.

The coolest thing about this image is the tire tread makings. I also like the way the texture of the cover is completely worn away... and yet... you can still make out the pattern.

The heavily worn covers always appeal to me. They have a burnish which reflects the light very delicately.
