This is a very old cover.

I can tell by the wide mounting flange and the quality of the casting. One hardly ever sees such ornate designs being produced by any foundry within our generation. This sort of attention to detail is a thing of the past. The holes in this one orginally contained poured-in glass inserts... which would allow a limited amount of light to be cast into the workspace below. The glass has long since cracked and fallen out... but still... this is one of the oldest covers I have ever seen. The fact that it is set in concrete that is so new and pristine also tells me that somewhere... there is a city engineer who reused this cover when he affected sidwalk repairs... this person was either trying to save a few hundred bucks... or, more likely, trying to retain a bit of the history of Rodgers Arkansas.

I salute this professional!
