It's important to devote to a deity because the deity can help you in times of peril. But it is crucial that you choose your deity carefully, because you will be stuck with your choice for the next 200 hours of actual playing time.  And with a poorly chosen deity, those 200 hours will seem even longer.

How to choose a deity:

1.  Read the help files to learn what deities are and what they can do for you. The most important of these are Help deities, Help supplicate, Help favor, and Help devote.

2. Take a look at the chart below and make a list of the deities that seem to be best suited for your race, class, gender, and the alignment that you want to follow.  Your deity will give you one or more spell effects when your favor is high, so pay attention to which effects would be most desirable.

3.  You should visit the prophets to see whether the deities on your list would work for you.  Go to the Hall of Prophets at nw, 2w, 3n, u, 2n from DH[].  Give 1000 coins to Krysalyn.  There are four prophets here whom you may consult, and your 1000 coins allow you to visit only one of the four (you can pay again to visit the others).  Kephleri (southeast) and Lristan (northwest) can tell you about your chances to prosper with each of the deities on your list (Tell Kephleri Adendra, etc.).  You can seek advice on as many deities as you with without having to pay again.  Cormier (southwest) will tell you what to do to gain favor from each deity (although you can find similar information free of charge by typing Help <deityname>).  Finally you could visit Xerarch (northeast) to find where the devotion rooms are for each deity, but this is unnecessary because the directions are listed below.

4.  By now you should have a very short list of deities from which to choose.  Consider what actions each of these deities will expect from you, and decide whether these expectations match the way you intend to play your character.  For example, some deities will punish you for killing evil mobs, and others will punish you for killing humans.  To find out what each deity wants, type Help <deityname>.

5.  Now you should seek advice from people who have chosen the deities that are still on your list before you make your final choice.  It could be the case that a deity who looks like a good choice might be a real stickler when it comes to granting favor. Type "who Adendra" to see who Adendra's devotees are, or another deity's name as appropriate.

6.  Make your final choice, and follow the directions below to find the room in which you can devote.

7.  If you decide that you don't like the deity after devoting, that's just too bad, at least for the next 100 game years!  After that you can undevote and redevote to another deity, but expect your original deity to punish you for your disloyalty.
