«b»John Buchanan (c1747-1820)«/b»
«b»Buchanan, John«/b»; born about 1747 in Augusta County, Virginia Colony; son of «b»Samuel Buchanan«/b» and «b»Martha Keyes«/b». John married twice: the name of his first wife is thought to be «b»Jane Edmiston«/b», they were married about 1775 in Virginia and had eight children. Ginny apparently died in early 1792 near the time that Andrew Buchanan, the eighth child, was born. The name of his second wife is thought to be «b»Jane "Ginny"Patterson«/b». Records in Davidson County, Tennessee, show that John Buchanan and Jane Patterson were married on December 31, 1792. John Buchanan and Jane Patterson had five children; according to John Buchanan's will, she was living at the time of his death in 1820 - although the will does not indicate where she was living at the timehttp://www.geocities.com/janet_ariciu/Williams.html
In the fall of 1779 a party, was on the way to Kentucky by pack horse. There was the older John Buchanan, his wife and three sons, Samuel, John and Alexander. There were also John and James Mulherrin with their families, Stephen Williams, Daniel Williams and Thomas Thompson (one of the sons of Roger Thompson) going to Clark's Station a mile from Danville Tenn. to leave their wives and children in comparative safety, while they went on down to the Middle Cumberland to start a settlement with the Buchanans."FLASHBACK" published by the Washington County, Arkansas Historical Society

"Mr Lemke:
Mrs Margaret Ross if Litte Rock sent me a copy of John Buchanan's Will. I became a member of the Pulaski County Historical Society and ordered her books on the early settlers of Pulaski County. I found them to be very interesting and the product of a great deal of work. Also, I made the usual inquiry about Coloman Cox and his father in law John Buchanan. The latter's will reveals some interesting things. it is reads as follows:Pulaski County Will Book a page 1-2

All the records that I have seen in the possession of relateives give Margaret Buchanan
as the wife of Magaret Buchanan as the wife of Coleman Cox, as does Mr Humphrey in his book on the Buchanans but the above will would seem to make that statement an error for Margaret was the wife of Marrs.from my study of the census records and Mr. Humprey's list of the Children of John Buhanan as taken from the Buchanan Bible, I think Coleman Cox's wife was probably the Ann list as 10th child. Her probably name was Martha Ann as Patsey is the nickname for Martha. The folowing children for Coloman Cox and Patsey Buchanan name their eldest daughter Martha

In Reply to: Re: COX,, Phineas/Samuel 1764/1790, Warren by Shawnna Wills Patterson of 433I have always thought that Phineas was related to John P Cox who married Sarah Nunally and died in Warren Co, KY. I don't think it is a coincidence that John names one of his kids Phineas(I think that the P in John P Cox is probably also Phineas). Also descendants of John and Phineas get married! I am pretty sure now after finding a will for Mildred Estes Cox, wife of Frederick Cox(son of John Cox and Mary Coleman), that John P Cox is their son who is mentioned in the will of 1822 as living beyond Virginia. I did find a pedigree on Rootsweb that had the father of Phineas as an unknown William Cox of VA. Frederick Cox had two brothers Bartley and John. Both married Bouldin girls. I can find no children for Bartley, and John had two sons Richard and John. This John could also be John P COx. I can't find any record of what happened to the nephews of Frederick Cox. John P Cox named his oldest child Coleman Cox, which has led some to include John P Cox as a son of John Cox and Mary Coleman. However, Mary would have been well past 50 at his birth in 1758 so he is much more likely to be a grandson. If John P and Phineas are not brothers than they must be at least cousins or other close relation.
. Following is a part that case that gives information of Frederick and Mildred Cox's Children:
"Your orators further sheweth your Honor that the following are the children of the said Milly Cox to Wit. The Defendants Isham Cox who lives in the state of Tennessee (later Alabama) John Cox who lives beyond the limits of the state (in Virginia) Franc is who intermarried with Phillip Anglin both of who live in Virginia . Aarmin intermarried with Thomas Bouldin who resides in Virginia. Mary, intermarried with Jonathan Vernon who lives in Ohio. Sally intermarried with the defendant John Simmons who resides in the county of Stokes (NC).
All the above children survived their mother. They further show that said Milly Cox had a daughter named Nancy who intermarried with Thomas Childress, and by whom she had an only child a daughter which intermarried with ____Riddle by whom she had children, whose names are unknown to our orators and who reside in South Carolina, and that said childress and wife and and Riddle and wife all died in the lifetime of said Milly Cox, and that letters of administrations was legally grantedd to the estate of _______.
Your orators shew that the said Mildred Cos had a daughter named Mildred, who after she arrived of full age, died in the lifetime of her mother in 1822.

3-13-2012 JCCName: [Samuel] BUCHANAN , Sr.
Sex: M
Birth: ABT. 1718 in [Chester Co., PA]
Death: BEF. 18 MAR 1783 in Washington Co., VA
Note:It is believed that Samuel Buchanan, Sr. was the son of [Samuel] Buchanan and Martha
[Edmondson/Edmiston] and that he was born in Pennsylvania (probably Chester Co.) about 1718. This family was very likely members of the Buchanan Clan of Sterlingshire, Scotland, of which many members emigrated to Ireland and later to America after the outlawing of the clan. Samuel's family is
believed to have settled first in Chester Co., PA in about 1702. According to Mrs. Margaret Thompson's
statement (taken in 1860 when she was 80 years old), some members of the family remained in PA while
others (including Samuel) moved to Augusta Co., VA.Samuel Buchanan, Sr. and Martha [Keys] may have been married in Pennsylvania before the families moved to Virginia. Because at least three generations of Samuel Buchanan families were living in Augusta Co., VA during the same period of time, it is very difficult to separate each one in the many transactions that were recorded. On 20 May 1756, John Buchanan, Gentleman, late of Reed Creek, sold to Samuel Buchanan 393 acres of land adjoining John Edminson on Moffett's Creek. This is the tract of land where Samuel and his family lived during their stay in Augusta Co. This Major John Buchanan had married the daughter and heiress of James Patton (one of the driving forces behind the settlement of southwestern Virginia) and is believed to have been Samuel's brother. Samuel, Sr.'s will was written on 11 Oct. 1774 and proved by William Edmiston and Andrew Buchanan in Washington Co., VA on 18 Mar. 1783. It is not known when Samuel's wife Martha died.
Wilson Grandbury Buchanan, early settler of Louisiana and Texas, made a statement similar to Mrs. Peggy (Buchanan) Thompson's which is transcribed below:
"Samuel and Martha Buchanan came from Ireland and settled in PA. They had five sons: Andrew, Robert, John (written up separately), Samuel (John Kirkpatrick's grandfather) and Moses.
Moses was the father of Old Squire Sam, Robert and John. Robert was the father of Minerva, who married Andrew Crawford, and came to Cane Hill. She was murdered by the Negro woman Cal. Cal was hanged somewhere near the White Church. Minerva left a baby son, Robert, who was taken by Ellen and John Buchanan, and given a home with them until he was grown. He lived in Spearfish, SD and is now dead.
John Buchanan, son of Samuel and father of Samuel, is the grandfather of Wilson Grandbury Buchanan. John's other children and their families are as follows:
* Thomas, born Aug. 14, 1776, died at Cane Hill and is buried there. He married Jennie Neely. She died at Bowling Green, KY in 1830, and is buried there. Thomas married a second time, to Sallie, and they had the following children: Mary, who married Boatright, and had Mary and Jim.
* James, Oct. 13, 1779, married Elizabeth (Betsy) Woody. He came to northwest AR, before it opened for settlement by whites. Built a log house near what is now called the "White Church", at "the upper end of the hill". In this house, the first Sunday Scool in the state was organized, Oct. 28, 1830. Mr. Orr of New York was the first superintendent. He soon went back to New York and Samuel Carnahan, son of Rev. John Carnahan, was superintendent for 20 years, being absent only two Sundays.
* Robert, born Nov. 27, 1798, married Polly Stagner, lived first at Cane Hill, then moved to Madfison Co. Had a son named Gus, who married a Pierson, daughter of Rev. Ben Pierson. A grandaughter married Bill Ferguson and lives at Mayfield, AR.
* Andrew, born Jan. 23, 1792, married Mrs. Sina Neal. Was the first owner of Prairie Grove. Built a house beside the spring. Was a C. P. preacher and a good one, too. Was a strong man, a good leader. The first person to die in Prairie Grove was a woman who asked to be buried where the wild flowers had bloomed so sweetly the spring before. So, Uncle Buck (Andrew) donated that piece of land to be a cemetery and enough to build a church beside it. The church was used as a hospital during the war and escaped burning. It still stands. Uncle Buck and Aunt Sina are buried there, as are Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Betsy, and Greenfield Buchanan.
* Martha, born Dec. 18, 1793, married Coleman Cox and died in KY. Cox and second wife lived on Cane Hill, near Clyde. Martha had sons who were C. P. preachers: Anderson, Burwell and perhaps, Samuel.
John Buchanan, father of those enumerated above, married a second time. His wife was Jane [Patterson]. Their children were:
* Ann, born 1795.
* Elizabeth, born Dec. 25, 1797, who married the Rev. George Morrow at Ft. Smith, when it was but a fort. Settled in what they thought was western Arkansas, but a new treaty made their land Indian country, so they had to take a new place. Another treaty did the same thing, so they pushed further west to the farm still owned by grandson Oscar Morrow. The nearby postal office is called Morrow. Their children, Hugh, John, Dutch or Russell, Meg (Chandler), some others and youngest son, G. W. (called Dick), are still living at Lincoln, AR. Uncle George was a wiry man, very hardy and he lived to be 92. He would get up on his pony from the ground when he was 90 and ride at a gallup most of the time. He and Aunt Betsy are buried at the home place in Morrow.
* Alexander, born Jan. 22, 1800, married Lavinia Shannon, daughter of Joseph Shannon.
* Nancy, born Dec. 22, 1802, married ? Small."
