Click Map "hot spots" or go to pictures:  Graveyard No. 1 Pictures (Closeup of 1) - Graveyard No. 2 Pictures

(1) Oldest Kagay gravesites found in the New Market/Quicksburg area, in the middle of a ploughed field, shown on this 1880 map to be the property of John H. Kagay, currently belonging to a Wilkins family. Wilkin's Garage is at the entrance to the dirt road that runs next to the field that the graveyard is in, and permission should be asked here before going to the graveyard. This is adjacent to the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, and not far from Quicksburg which is west of the river from here. A two story, Civil War era house that is believed to have been built by John Henry Kagay (1842-1895) is at the other end of the field opposite Wilkin's garage.

Inscriptions found on the headstones there:    (partial, especially since I never found Rudolph, Henry's 7th child, who was stated as being buried here in the Kagy Family history book)

Stones:

a) "1813 Hor Den 4 Ist Barbara Kagy Gestorben Alt 81" (this agrees with the correct dates for Barbara Stoner Kagay (1732-1813), Henry Kagay's (4th son of John Rudolph "Hanse" Kagay) wife)      Gravestone.

b) There is a headstone next to hers that is of the same material (shale?), size, shape, color, but the facing is gone except for some carving at the top that looks like the ornamental engraving at the top of hers. This is assumed to be the grave stone of Barbara's husband, Henry Kagay (1728-1783), my 4-Gr Grandfather.

c) Anna Kagey b. 12-8-1772 d. 9-1-1828 (There is some doubt as to whether this Anna is the 4th child of Henry and Barbara Stoner Kagay, but was claimed to have been born 6-25-1762 in The Kagay Family book, or the wife of Abraham, the 5th child of Henry and Barbara Kagay, who was noted in the history book as dieing Sep 1, 1831. Since Abraham is buried here, and there is agreement on the "Sep 1" portion of the date, I will assume that this is his wife, Anna Neff Kagay, daughter of Dr. Jacob Neff. )

d) Abraham Kagey b. 7-14-1764 d. 9-15-1831 (This Abraham is the 5th child of Henry and Barbara Stoner Kagay)

e) John son of Henry Kagey and Barbara Kagey b. March 7, 1757 d. Oct 11, 1845 (John is the 1st child of Henry and Barbara Stoner Kagay and a prominent preacher in this area, known as the "Good Man" of Shenandoah Valley.)

f) Elizabeth Kagey consort of John Kagey b. July 1758 d. Mar 29, 1836 (This is Elizabeth Brenneman; her stone was broken into four parts in 1994, laying on the ground. Her sister, Christena Brenneman, married John Kagey's brother Jacob, who was a Mennonite minister)

g) Abraham son of John and Elizabeth Kagey b. July 4, 1792 d. Nov 17, 1859 Age 67 yrs 4 mo. ( he lived in the house of his father, John, on Smith's Creek, until his death in 1859)

h) Frances consort of Abraham Kagey b. 3-27-1802 d. 3-12-1840 (Frances Yount Kagay, daughter of Benjamin and Barbara Yount)

i) Anna daughter of John and Elizabeth Kagey Born 4-4-1788 d. 7-17-1868 Age 80 yrs 3 mo 13 days (She was the constant companion of her father John when blind for the last seven years of his life; she was blind herself for the last seven years of her life.)

j) Barbara daughter of John and Elizabeth Kagey b. 3-9-1795 d. 9-1828 (Second daughter of John and Elizabeth that they named Barbara, the first dieing when only 4 years old, in abt 1786.)

k) Henry Neff Kagey b. 7-4-1804 d. 5-25-18__ (could not read the last two digits from a 1994 photo; this is the first child of Abraham, son of Henry and Barbara Kagy)

l) Mary Neff, wife of Henry N. Kagey Age 40 yrs 4 mo 28 days d. 3-23-1859

m) Jacob Moses Kagey son of Henry N. Kagay d. 3-14-1850 Age 5 yrs 6 mo 10 days (Not mentioned in Kagay Family book; states that Henry N. only had one son.)

n) Peter Kagey d. 2-2-1849 Age 41 yrs 6 mo 27 days (Peter, 1807-1849, is the 10th child of Rudolph Kagey, 1768-1828, by his second wife, Barbara Burkholder, 1773-1852, Rudolph being the 7th child of Henry and Barbara Stoner Kagay and in my ancestral lineage. Peter lived in his father's old home along with his sisters Anna and Magdalene. Peter is a half-brother to Christian R. Kagay, my Gr-Gr Grandfather.)

o) Barbara Neff ??ES TOT July 10 1816 Alt 26 6M  (a Barbara Kagey b. Jan 8, 1790 and "died young" was known to have married a Dr. David Neff, this must be her; further support to this is that her third and last child was born in 1811, making 1816 plausible; this would be the third oldest stone at this site and like the first two, is also in German and looks more "hand-chiseled"; all other stones after this date are in English and are of a more professional look. )

Note: this farmland and graveyard is adjoining land once owned by David Neff (see map), and some of the above graves may be for individuals that lived on that property.

(2) This gravesite is near the intersection of Smith's Crk and the current Hwy 211, and is apparently on the land described in "The Kagay Family" history book as being where Henry Kagay first settled after moving to New Market. Pictures (ca. 1898) of this homestead are shown on P.247 and 248 of that book. The graveyard has a cinderblock masonry wall around it currently. The Reverend John Kagay (1757-1845) (son of Henry) lived and died near this same property. Henry, his wife Barbara Stoner, children Abraham, Anna, and Reverend John, John's wife Elizabeth Brenneman, and their children Abraham, Anna, and Barbara, and some grandchildren, including Henry Neff Kagay and his wife Mary Neff, are all buried at gravesite (1).  The only stones I took note of at this cemetery, No. "2", (since I came here first and did not find what I was looking for, namely, Henry or Barbara Stoner Kagay) were that of Christian Kagay b. June 22, 1767, d. July 21, 1834, and a rough brown stone with only "H.K." scratched on it. (possibly Christian's ninth child Henry 1814-1828, a twin of his daughter Elizabeth). Christian was Henry and Barbara Stoner Kagay's sixth child and the last one born to them in Connestoga, Pennsylvania before the move to Shenandoah Valley in 1768. He lived just south of this property. (labeled "Chris Kagey" on the above map)

The following Kagay headstones were observed at a Dunker Church Cemetery, just north of "The Old Kagey Graveyard", site No. 1, near the main turnpike and John H. Kagay's old property.   Dunker Church Cemetery.

a) John Henry Kagey 1842-1895, Emma F. Kagay 1854-1913 (1st child of Henry Neff Kagay and Mary Neff (Cousins?), b. 8-15-1842 d. 3-17-1895, and may have been the owner of the house seen in 1994 next to the Old Kagay Graveyard on current Wilkins property. It is said that he lived on the same property as his father Henry Neff Kagay, and his grandfather Abraham Kagey, who is the son of Henry and Barbara Stoner Kagay. He was a soldier in the Confederate Army for the last three years of the Civil War, and was a teacher for ten years after the war.)

b) Barbara Kagey, daughter of Abraham and Anna Kagey d. 4-27-1832 Age 17 yrs 2 mo 28 d (This daughter is not listed in the Kagay Family book for Abraham and Anna Kagay. Another Barbara b. 1811 d. 1892 is listed as the fifth child born for the above parents.)

c) George Kagey b. 5-23-1857 d. 8-15-1895 Age 38 yrs 2 m 23 d (place in family unknown)

d) Rebecca wife of Isaac Kagey b 5-20-1842 d. 11-5-1907 (Isaac is the 2nd son of Peter (above at site (1)) and grandson of Rudolph- 7th child of Henry)

e) Franklin Kagey b. 11-4-1865 d. 6-27-1926 (place in family unknown)

(Many thanks to Mr. Braxton Theis, who I chanced upon in New Market on our trip there in 1994. He graciously showed me around to some of the Kagay homestead sights and pointed me in the direction of many others.)
