MANRIQUE Family History:

Durango, Mexico, is located in northwest Mexico in the Sierra Madre Occidental and is where Joaquin Manriquez hailed. His wife Virginia Prado came from Morelos, a town whose exact location is unknown although there is a Morelos in Coahuila, Mexico near Eagle Pass, TX. The parents of Joaquin were Salvador Manriquez and Josefa Barrasa. The parents of Virginia were Luis Prado and Ines Gaso as recorded in a copy of the baptismal record dated September 12, 1918 from the parish of Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico for Joaquin Manriquez, Jr. who was born in 1880. The civil birth record from Matamoros states that Joaquin was 31 years old and a laborer living in Matamoros and that his wife, Virginia came from the town of San Diego and was 24 years old. These records also have the "z" at the end of the last name Manriquez, but is later dropped in time. The town of Matamoros was settled in 1818 and named Matamoros in 1823 after a martyred priest, Mariano Matamoros. The children of Joaquin and Virginia include Jesus, Anselmo and Joaquin. According to family history, Virginia came to the United States as a widow with her sons right before the turn of the century. The census of 1920 does record her as being a widow and coming to the country in 1900. She and her family worked on a farm in Arthur, TX near Orange Grove and saved their money in order to buy land. They do buy property as a new community is sprawling, Alice, TX. Alice was named in honor of Alice King Kleberg, daughter of Richard King, steamboat captain and founder of the King Ranch. In 1896 the population of the town was 885 and the same year that Virginia and her sons actually claim to have come to the United States in the 1910 census. The area was first settled in 1883 in the town of Collins, but the town of Alice quickly became the main area as it was a major cattle shipping point from the railroad depot. By 1910 Jesus Manriquez owns his home in Alice. Those living with him included his brother Joaquin and Maria Barbosa and two of their children, Maria and Margarita. Jesus and Joaquin were working on a ranch as laborers. Jesus was educated in that he could read and write whereas Joaquin could not. Jesus worked as a salesman for the Candy Kitchen in 1920 while living with his mother. Those also living in this home were; Trinidad, Leonso, Canato and Paubla all listed as Virginia’s children, but family history tells us that these could have been her stepchildren. Leonso Cavazos is the informant listed in Virginia’s death record. She passed away November 18, 1952 in Alice, TX and is also buried in Collins Cemetary. The actual burial site is unknown, but is believed to be in the same area, perhaps in one of the many unmarked graves, as Jesus, Anselmo and other family members. Virginia lived a very long life, passing away at the age of 95. In 1910, Joaquin and Maria were already married for 5 years. Maria’s parents, Basilio Barbosa and Manuela Hernandez, were from Mexico. Maria Barbosa passed away on August 20, 1947 and is buried at Collins Cemetary next to Joaquin who passed away 22 years later six days after his 89th birthday. The 1920 census records Anselmo’s family all living together his wife, Manuela, and their children; Eugenia, Thomas, Macara, Anselmo Jr., Gulian, Noverto and Magdalmo.

The 1920 census lists the family of Joaquin and Maria Barbosa as living in Alice, TX with their children; Maria, Magarita, Baldomero and Felix. Baldomero was born on February 27, 1914 in Alice, growing up across the street from where he lives today on Prado Street, named after his grandmother, in a house that he built. The next street is named Virginia. Baldomero marries Aurora Eliza Trevino in Alice, TX. Eliza was born on February 6, 1912 in San Pedro, TX which is somewhere in Brooks County. Her parents were Nasario Trevino, who was in his second marriage, and Reyes Rodriguez both of Mexico and living and working at the Alta Vista Ranch. It was a cattle ranch as well as a hunting ranch. Her father passes away in 1919 when Eliza is seven years old and is believed to be buried at a ranch near Falfurrias, TX that may be the Alta Vista Ranch. According to family history, her mother, Reyes, passes away when Eliza was 12 years old in 1924. Eliza’s brother, Frederico is said to have raised her. Eliza’s siblings include; Renolfo, Jovita and Frederico.

Baldomero is a retired electrician for Central Power and Light and claimed his fifteen minutes of fame when a bolt fell and hit him on the head. Fortunately the company had recently purchased hard hats, which he wore and inadvertently tested. The children of Baldomero and Eliza are; Gloria, Baldomero Jr., Albert and Gracie.
