Zapata County, Zapata

Zapata County Courthouse 2010 This is the new Zapata County Courthouse, completed in 2005. There were three previous, built in 1874, 1901 and 1953. While I'm not sure what happened to the 1874, I do know the 1953 has been demolished.

Zapata County Courthouse The 1901 courthouse apparently still exists, and if I knew which lake it lives at the bottom of I would have taken a picture with it. Heck, I may run down to Canyon Lake one day and take a picture with the water there and just say I took a picture with the former Zapata County Courthouse. :-)

Zapata County Courthouse "Formed from Webb and Starr counties; created January 22, 1858; organized April 26, 1858; named in honor of Antonio Zapata, a pioneer stockman of the region, supporter of the Republic of the Rio Grande; county seat, Carrizo, 1858; name later changed to Zapata."

Enrique Kiki Camarena On the first floor is a bust of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, the special agent whose work led to the Red Ribbon Campaign.
