Racing

The fourth season got off to an inauspicious start with a fourth-place finish in the one race we got in on Opening Day. The wind died, allowing two Sunfish to catch and pass us on the final upwind/downwind leg. Good to be back racing, though. The second weekend of the Spring Series went much the same, only with a lot more wind.

The third weekend there was rain in the forecast, so none of the other boats showed up (well, I guess it's true that they're called Sunfish). We went ahead and raced ourselves anyway. We did a lot of one-on-one racing with Deke and his Sunfish for the rest of the series, piling up some second places, and wound up in third overall.

Didn't race the Dog Days series, but survived organizing race committee one weekend (I was serving as fleet captain for the centerboard fleet).

Nobody showed up for the first two circuit stops, so we only did four regattas in 2006. We had a second place at the AYC Centerboard Regatta and a first place at the HOT Regatta, and even with fourth places at the remaining two regattas (where more boats showed up) we wound up second overall. The Leukemia Cup at AYC in October was particularly memorable as I had had minor surgery about a week and a half before--even just sitting in the car on the drive out was pretty painful, and I had to skip the party Saturday night. It was fairly breezy, too, and we had to race quite some distance from the club on Saturday because there was a swimming event going on as well. I had Dave and his daughter Emma crewing for me. Wurstfest was fun because we had a very good turnout, with three Harpoons, although one of them only raced the first day.

Got another third-place finish in the fall series using the usual tactic of generally finishing in last place but showing up more weekends than some of the other boats (although we missed a couple).
