McCamey Texas Veterans Memorial  

It is the sole purpose of the McCamey Texas Veterans Memorial Committee, Inc. to honor McCamey, Texas veterans and those that gave the ultimate sacrifice serving in the Uniformed Military Services defending and protecting the Constitution of the United States of America as one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

The concept for this Memorial began at the Fabulous 60’s Reunion in September 2006 when a veteran displayed a mini Memorial in honor of fallen classmates of the Vietnam War; USAF 1LT. Donald C. Smith-KIA 12-20-65; USMC PFC. Robert G. Chenault-KIA 1-31-68; US ARMY SSGT Salvador G. Duran-KIA 5-20-70 A meeting was held to explore the Memorial concept in November 2006 in McCamey, Texas.  The McCamey Veterans Memorial Committee was formed to honor all McCamey Veterans beginning with WW 1 through Enduring Freedom (AFGHANISTAN) and Iraqi Freedom (IRAQ).  

The committee was incorporated in the spring 2007 as The McCamey Texas Veterans Memorial Committee, Inc.  The Memorial will be constructed through individual and group donations.  The efforts of the committee, individuals and groups will be on a voluntary basis.  The date for the Memorial dedication will be announced once the Memorial is completed.  After the Memorial dedication on the corner of Burleson and 6th St., the Memorial will be owned and maintained by the City of McCamey.  The Grand Theater site was donated by Bruce Grady in remembrance of his late wife, Debbie.

Presentations about the Memorial began Memorial weekend 2007 at the Nifty Fifties Reunion in McCamey, Texas Subsequent presentation dates will be posted on the MHS Alumni Website link.  Initial fund raising initiatives will commence in November 2007.

The MTVMC, INC. dedicated the Memorial site 10 November 2007 at Burleson and 6th st. as part of the Veterans Day activities.  A presentation was made at the MHS pep rally on 9 November 2007 . There were approximately 200 in attendance at the site dedication. There were 25 veterans from WW2, Korea , Cold War , Vietnam , Enduring Freedom( Afghanistan ) and Iraqi Freedom. They were presented to the audience and recognized for their service. The Boy Scout Troop and MISD middle school students served as the color guard-scout master Martin Zuniga and sponsor middle school teacher Vanessa Zuniga and MHS student council sponsor Amy Acosta. The McCamey High School Band, director Trey Singleton, played patriotic tunes and the MISD primary school choir, director Shawna Torres, sang patriotic songs. Master of Ceremonies Veteran Michael Holguin introduced Veteran Reverend John Holguin who gave the invocation. McCamey Mayor Sherry Phillips introduced the MTVMC and Advisory Board. Veteran Bill Brown with the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans Memorial was the main speaker. He spoke about his experiences growing up and knowing veterans from WW2 and Korea , not realizing what war was like until he served with the USArmy in Vietnam . His commitment to Veterans is ongoing by his involvement with the Permian Basin Vietnam Veterans (KIA) Memorial located at the Odessa/Midland Airport. Mark Peters led the pledge of allegiance and Denise Zarate led honor the Texas flag. Yesenia Gomez, Jasmin Ortiz and Roylene Davis each read a veterans poem. Trey Singleton played TAPS in remembrance of those KIA. Bruce Grady and grandchildren transferred the property deed to the Committee in honor of his wife. Kristi Grady spoke about her mother Debbie’s commitment to servicemen and women by the care packages she would send to those serving in Afghanistan (Enduring Freedom) and Iraqi (Iraqi Freedom) before her death this year.

The MTVMC, INC wishes to express it’s gratitude to the following that sponsored the site dedication: Willie Martinez-Upton County commissioner, county employees Jerry Moya and Rowdy Mooney/site preparation; Joanne Darby-McCamey Music Mart/sound system; Dennis Greer-McCamey News publisher/site sign; Shane Thedford-primary school principal, Scott Allen-middle school principal, Donny/Donna Wiley-high school principal/pep rally sponsor, Jerry Stinson-district superintendent, Jay McWilliams-head football coach; Deputy Busby-Upton County Sheriff/crowd-traffic control; MTVMC advisory board: Melanie Anderson-Upton County attorney, Ronnie Thomas-Security State Bank, Jodie Gulihur-economic development, Glynda Taylor-artist, Dennis Greer-McCamey News, Gary Elliot-AEP supervisor, current and former McCamey residents and especially the 25 Veterans who honored the site dedication with their presence.

The MTVMC encourages McCamey Veterans to fill out and submit their survey forms for their names to be placed on the Memorial. Relatives of deceased, KIA veterans or active duty may submit the forms on behalf of their loved ones(veterans).

All donations will go toward the construction/dedication of the Memorial. Donations of any amount are appreciated and they are tax deductible. For God and Country.
