The Cuban flag, which you see waving proudly in the left frame, is known as La Estrella Solitaria. In English this means the lone star. Ironically, the state flag of my new home, Texas, is also called the lone star.
I was born in the city of Santiago de Cuba. I had a very happy childhood. Cuba is a wonderful island, but - well, you read the quote from Marti. My parents and I moved here from Cuba in 1989. Here I met and married my husband. Dennis and I have been happily married since 1993. I am so happy to be living in the United States, but I miss Cuba, too. We look forward with great anticipation to the day when Cuba will be free.
The Communist experiment has failed miserably virtually everywhere in the world, including Cuba. The Cuban people will not remain in Communist bondage forever. They are too proud, too strong, and too noble. Dennis and I have ambigous feelings about the U.S. embargo against Cuba. On the one hand, the Cuban people, including my family, are suffering great hardship. On the other hand, perhaps one day it will help to bring Castro down. Or does it simply encourage him to be more defiant. Cubans do not back down easily. There are no easy answers. Only time will tell.
