Tricked into purchasing
Circuit City's
CityAdvantage Protection Plan?

Don't feel alone, read stories from previous customers
& from
Circuit City Employees!
Who knows the quality of their product better than
the salesman? Read THEIR opinion of the "warranty"
and how honest they were while trying to sell it,
IN
THEIR OWN WORDS!
(I was contacted by, according to him, one of Circuit City's "trained employees", Brandon <brandon@yourhost.com>, who thought this page and the victims portrayed here were something to joke about and mock. As a "trained employee of CC", he may know how to get your warranty honored, even though us "retarded" customers can't seem to get results.)

FACT:
The CityAdvantage Protection Plan "Extended" Warranty
DOES NOT add years AFTER the manufacturer's warranty,
it expires concurrently! In other words: if you were to buy
a TV from Circuit City that comes with it's own 2 year
warranty and you add the CityAdvantage 3 year "extended"
warranty to your purchase, your TV would be out of
warranty 3 years after you purchased the TV,
NO MATTER
WHAT THE SALESMAN TELLS YOU.
(see the employee testimony link above!)
Many people are unaware that their "extended" warranty
plan covers their purchase at the SAME TIME the
manufacturer's warranty is ALREADY covering it!
Many, like me, believe that they are adding the number
years that they are PAYING FOR.........not so with this plan!
Most customers would probably assume that they had
ALREADY paid for the manufacturer's warranty with the
purchase of their product and would receive those years
without question and that if they were to purchase additional
years
, they would receive those years, as well. So, it would
be easy to believe that if your product had it's own 2 year
warranty and you bought 3 years of extended coverage,
you would be receiving 5 years of coverage. Guess again
with the CityAdvantage Protection Plan! The only thing
"extended" about the plan is that it lasts a little longer than
the manufacturer's warranty, but it covers the product at
THE SAME TIME AS THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY!
For the first 2 years, you would have 2 warranties for the
same item, AT THE SAME TIME! Shouldn't a single warranty
do the job? Why do we need double coverage?
Well, maybe the links above can explain why we may have
problems with
one of the "warranties" and need the other!

I would love to hear from
ANYONE that has ever been told
that they should add the extended warranty AFTER the
manufacturer's warranty has run it's course so that they
actually receive all of the years that they have paid for,
the year/years that they purchased WITH their product and
the years that they purchased with the "extended" plan.
Has
ANYONE had a Circuit City employee tell them that
it wouldn't be smart to purchase the CityAdvantage plan
while the manufacturer is already covering their product?
They don't tell you that. They push you to buy it immediately!
If you do, you have paid to throw away the manufacturer's
warranty THAT YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED
!

Why do I point this out?
In December of 2002, I purchased a bigscreen TV from
Circuit City. I was told by the salesman
(see the link above)
that my TV came with it's own 3 year warranty, but it
would be a good idea to extend the warranty by purchasing
the CityAdvantage Protection Plan. The salesman told me that
I could add years to the plan by purchasing it. He rattled off
several figures and plans, but I wasn't interested at first. He
pressed the issue, like a salesman does, and convinced me
that I should add protection for my large purchase. I opted for
adding 4 years to my warranty, based on the quotes he gave.
I told him that I thought that 7 years of coverage sounded
great and even confirmed it with him by asking "So, my
TV will be covered for 7 years, right?". He said "that's right".
I have a witness that told me that they also thought I was
supposed to have 7 years of warranty. They were there and
heard the same story that I heard from the
salesman.
Imagine my surprise when I received a notice from the
CityAdvantage company that my warranty was about to
expire at the end of 3 years! I called them to correct the
matter, but was told that their computer showed that my
TV only came with a 1 year warranty and I had only received
the 3 year Protection Plan. I told the woman that the
salesman had told me a total of 7 years was what I would
be receiving, but she basically told me "too bad, you're only
getting what was shown on the computer
". She told me that
my warranty WOULD expire in December of 2005. I told her
that I needed some answers for why I was deceived and
for why my warranty would be expiring at 3 years after
having paid for 3 years of "extended" coverage and receiving
1 year from the manufacturer. It took speaking to a few other
employees to finally find out that the "extended" years that I
PURCHASED started at the same time as the year
that came WITH THE TV!
I was told that there was nothing they could do about the
salesman lying to me at the time of purchase and that I
would not be receiving 4 years of warranty as I had
purchased. And, I would definitely not be receiving the 7
years that I was promised by the
salesman at the time of
my purchase(LAST) from Circuit City. I guess they thought
I would just shut up and fade away..............

But here I am!

I will be adding to this page as I can and would be happy to
post your experience with Circuit City. If you would like to add
your story or link to it, please
email it to me.

Based on the testimony that I have easily found from customers and
employees, and the apparent volume of complaints about the sales tactics of
the Circuit City employees when selling the CityAdvantage "service" and the
treatment of those who attempted to use that "service" after paying for it, I
may consider initiating a class action lawsuit. There seem to be MANY others
that are demanding satisfaction from Circuit City and CityAdvantage. If you
feel that this is action that you may be interested in taking part in,
let me know. Don't worry, the lawyers will do all the work.
If I receive enough support, we can get the ball rolling. Hopefully, Circuit City
will finally be held responsible for their employees' actions and false promises.
I think we should all be refunded for their ridiculous warranty plan or for the
products that have not been covered by this "
will cover anything" warranty.
How many millions do you think they've made off of all of us with this
"protection" scheme? Mine cost me $289.99 and I didn't even receive half of
what I was promised!
It's time for them to give a little back!

Here's Michael Mathura's story
My story is very similar to most on your site. Two years ago we purchased a 42 inch LG plasma with a 2 year factory warranty and like many others we were convinced by the circuit city salesman to spend an extra $500 on the cityadvantage protection plan for an extra 3 years cover. So that would mean I will be covered until Aug. 2010 right! WRONG AUG. 2008. Early nov. 2007 we called a technician out to look at the picture that had gone bad. He removed the back, adjusted some stuff and put it back on the wall, the picture was worse. He informed me he would order a new panel for the tv which would take 7-10 days.A week later I was told the panel was no longer manufactured and I would be receiving a replacement tv upon approval from LG. Now every week since I've contacted the claims dept. twice a week and told they were still awaiting LG to authorize a replacement tv. Sat. Dec. 15th 2007 I contacted claims dept. and was now informed I was not getting a new tv but they had managed to find a panel for my tv(I guess they started making them again, lol). Was told to expect another 7-10 days wait. I contacted LG customer service and was informed circuit city did not need authorization from them as the factory warranty had expired and circuit cities cityadvantage plan was now the warranty. Since then we've been to the store where we received a number to call to sort everything out, as we've now decided the awaiting authorization ploy was to buy time while they tried to find a panel. Nobody contacted us to say they found a panel and we were no longer going to get a replacement tv. We learnt of the u-turn when I contacted them on 15th dec. 2007. We have now decided they should honor their promise of a replacement tv. The number the store manager gave us has led from one dead end to another, because they obviously have no intention of replacing my tv with one of equal value. It is now mon. dec. 17th and we keep getting new numbers to contact, with lots of getting put on hold. When we bought that tv it was over $3000 so you know they don't want to replace it with equal value. Hopefully they will honor the warranty but I'm not holding my breath.

Here's Erika's story
Hi!  Are you still collecting stories regarding the Circuit City Advantage program performance?  If so, I have a story.

I purchased a large LG plasma screen tv about two years ago.  After about a year, one of the circuit boards broke.  It took three days to get a repairman out to look at it.  Although it was common for this specific board to break on LG plasma tv’s, the repairman told me that he unfortunately had just used his last one.  He said it would take 7-10 days to get a new part.  It took almost two weeks for him to come back and fix it.  He also warned me that the board on the other side would go out as well.  Sure enough, here I am a year later and the other board has gone out.   Once again, it took at least 3 days to get someone out to look at it.  And once again, even though I told them it was the same problem as last time, they just happened to be missing that specific part from their stock in the truck.  Again I was told that it would be 7-10 days to order the part.  I called Circuit City when it had been 8 days, they told me that the part wasn’t actually ordered until 3 days after I saw the repairman.  I asked to speak to a supervisor about it and was told I would have to call back in four days.  It’s has now been 10 days and no word from the repairman.   I called the 888-333-2333 repair line and spent 23 minutes on hold to talk to someone.  At first she told me that my case was closed, but then after I insisted my tv was still broken, she said that the part had actually arrived and she could schedule repair.  I find it pretty pathetic that I had to call them to schedule follow up repair.  So that’s where I am now.  Waiting for the repair, which was not able to be scheduled for another 3 days.  Provided the tv does actually get fixed when they say it will, it makes it a total of 15 days to fix a common and well known problem with my tv!

Regards, Erika

Here's Jeffery Addison's story
Hi,

I purchased a 56" Samsung DLP in May 2006. Recently my TV turns off automatically by itself after about 30 seconds. I've called Circuit City and Aon Corp (the holder of Warranty). No one answers from Circuit City and no one answers the phone at Aon (was waiting 30 minutes for someone to pick up, no one did), they've left a number on the recording to fax to which I did earlier this week, and I still have not gotten any response- very frustrated and would be interested in filing a law suit.

Here's Theresa Berry's story
I bought a 55" hdtv in Oct 2007 and was talked into buying the 4 year extended warrenty. What a joke in January a blue tint started spreading over the picture and now there is not any color, its like watching an old blck and white tv. Have been trying to get them to fix it for almost 4 months. They ripped me off good.

Here's Dave Conley's story
Do you know how to reach anyone about the extended warranties now? I know that our sales person told me that it was actually covered through GE and not circuit city.

Thanks
