Week VI
Rome's Legacy
Church, Ruins & History Ancient Rome is something of a puzzle. After dominating most of Western Europe for nearly 500 years, the empire slowly dissolved, leaving some impressive ruins, the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches and the Romantic languages to mark its presence. Less obvious relics are some legal principles and architectural styles. But there are some mysteries - the reasons for Rome's decline are still debated and we don't know how Latin was pronounced. Material from PBS and the History Channel and scenes from major movies will be used to illustrate the background to Rome's decline and the creation of the Roman Church - a Church that would go on to sustain and protect Ancient Rome's ceremonials and history respectively. |
