The Julian Dynasty
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Decay of Caesar's Legacy Caesar's chosen heir, Octavian was given the title/name of Augustus Caesar after finally defeating his co-consul, Mark Antony and being accepted by the Senate as Rome's first Emperor. History credits Augustus with being an enlightened and effective ruler - and probably as a result, he is largely ignored by public interest ("the good is oft interred with their bones..."). After his death, starting with Tiberius, Augustus' stepson, the Julian (Caesar's) Dynasty was a string of increasingly unpleasant and incapable (ie memorable) Emperors. The end of the line being marked by Nero. Thanks to Robert Graves novel 'I, Claudius' and an excellent series produced by the BBC, this decline is well documented. Most historians believe, however, that Graves treated Claudius more sympathetically than was deserved. To round out the picture, scenes from the unreleased Korda/von Sternberg production of 'I, Claudius' are included together with some (very) carefully chosen selections from Penthouse magazine's 'Caligula'. |
