Week IV
Mark Antony & Cleopatra
Strategy's Sticky End The national politics, civil war, murder, sexual tension and double suicide of Cleopatra's story have provided playwrights and screenwriters with plenty of grist for their audience-titillation mills. Scenes from two very different interpretations of Shakespeare's view of Cleopatra's doomed relationship with Mark Antony will be shown, together with scenes from the DeMille and Mankiewicz Cleopatra movies. While Cleopatra employed her attractions to revive the strategy she had initiated with Julius Caesar, Mark Antony became the victim of a 'Fatal Attraction'. Together they attempted to emulate the gods Dionysus and Isis. Unable to separate emotion from logic, Mark Antony slowly lost control in the 16 year long campaign to prevent Caesar's adopted son, Octavian, from establishing himself as the sole leader of Rome. His failure led to what is arguably history's most tragic misunderstanding and the birth of the Roman Empire. Given the highly emotional nature of the subject, a little light relief will be provided. |
