Week III
Julius Caesar & Cleopatra
Gentle War With Rome
The record of Cleopatra's life was mostly written by her Roman enemies. And thanks to William Shakespeare's play 'Antony & Cleopatra', which was based on that record, the popular view of Cleopatra's role in history has been limited to the romantic & doomed love affair with Mark Antony. This severely understates her significance.
Many historians now agree that she was a capable and astute international politician, willing to do whatever was necessary to recover Egypt's territorial losses to Rome.
This week we will focus on how she managed her relationship with Julius Caesar who idolized her, at least figuratively. Caesar's assassination happened just when it appeared that her strategy was beginning to succeed; she had given him a son. Her subsequent attempt to resume her campaign, this time with Mark Antony, will be covered in Week 4.
After a brief review of historical background material, selections from these movies will illustrate the movie industry's view of her relationship with Julius Caesar. Of particular interest is Gabriel Pascal's interpretation of George Bernard Shaw's play which hints at a very different Julius Caesar from the one suggested by the historical record.
