Suffered a serious engine room fire after leaking fuel oil that had collected in the bilge was (presumably) ignited by the heat of the boiler directly above. Eight of the nine sailors in the compartment safely evacuated; one sailor died from smoke inhalation (see dedication). The ship was deemed too damaged to warrant repairs.
